Things as Sums of Vibration
The map extends past waves to matter itself. A particle is a bound vibration, an atom a standing wave, a molecule a chord, a solid a collective mode, a living body a pattern that rebuilds itself. One scale, no second axis: organization is how much the one thing has summed onto itself, never a new ingredient.
The essay From Waves to Things is the readable version. This is the rigorous ladder, tagged for what each rung is: settled physics, an organizing lens, or an open edge.
The Principles establish that it is vibration interplaying with vibration, all the way down. This document walks that claim upward, from a single excitation to a living body, and shows that no new kind of thing is added at any step. What changes from rung to rung is not the substance. It is how much the one thing has folded onto itself.
The ladder
| Level | What it is, in settled terms | The vibration | Tag |
|---|---|---|---|
| Particle | A localized excitation of a quantum field | A knot of vibration held in place; its rest mass corresponds to a frequency (E = mc² = ħω; an electron's is ~1.2 × 10²⁰ Hz) | ESTABLISHED |
| Atom | Electrons bound to a nucleus | Standing waves; the electron's allowed states are the modes that fit, the way a string rings only at certain notes | ESTABLISHED |
| Molecule | Atoms sharing bonds | Coupled oscillators with characteristic modes; each substance has a spectral signature we read by adapter (spectroscopy) | ESTABLISHED |
| Solid, object | Many atoms bound in a lattice | Collective modes; a quantized lattice vibration is a phonon, a real quasiparticle, and it is what sound in a solid is made of | ESTABLISHED |
| Living body | A far-from-equilibrium system | A pattern that holds itself against decay by throughput (metabolism) and copies itself forward (heredity) | ESTABLISHED as physics, FRAMING as "a self-maintaining vibration" |
| Machine, AI | A made, organized system | A sum of vibration arranged to a purpose; in AI, a pattern of information instantiated in a physical substrate | FRAMING |
The one rule the ladder obeys FRAMING
At no rung is a second kind of thing introduced. There is no level where vibration stops and "matter" starts, or where matter stops and "life" starts. This is the load-bearing claim, and it is what separates the framework from a loose "everything is energy." The differences between a photon, a rock, and a person are real, but they are differences in how the one thing sums, not differences in what it is made of.
This is why there is no second axis. It is tempting to draw two scales, frequency across and "organization" up, and to plot a bacterium high on the second. But organization is not an independent ingredient. It is the degree and manner in which underlying vibrations combine into higher-order vibration. A body is not a point lifted onto a complexity axis; it is a sum of vibration that is itself vibration, still on the one scale, only more folded. The physics of this is ordinary: a phonon is literally a collective vibration of atoms treated as a vibration in its own right, and a molecule's modes are its atoms' motions combined. Higher structure being the collective vibration of its parts is how emergence already works. ESTABLISHED for the specific cases, FRAMING as the general statement.
The self-maintaining fold FRAMING, with ESTABLISHED support
The step from a rock to a cell is the one that tempts people to posit a new substance, so it is worth being exact.
A wave is a pattern with no fixed material: its medium stays roughly in place while the shape propagates, so the wave survives by continually re-forming. A living body is that same trick folded into time. It maintains its pattern against the decay that entropy demands by pushing free energy through itself, the property Schrödinger described as feeding on "negative entropy" and Prigogine formalized as a dissipative structure. And it carries its pattern across the turnover of its own matter by copying it: DNA is the stored, replicable form of the pattern, present in nearly every nucleated cell.
So DNA is not a wave. The fringe "wave genetics" claim, that DNA acts as a body-directing electromagnetic resonator, is CONTESTED and unsupported, and it is not what is meant here. The defensible claim is structural: DNA is the same kind of thing a wave is, form that outlasts its material by re-instantiating. Metabolism holds the pattern; heredity carries it forward. The difference between rigid persistence (a rock) and active persistence (a body) is a difference of degree in how a sum of vibration keeps its shape, not a difference of substance.
Machines and AI FRAMING
The same account covers made things. A machine is a sum of vibration organized toward a purpose. An AI is a pattern, a structure of information, instantiated in a physical substrate and copied between substrates the way any pattern is. This places machines and organisms on the same one scale, differing in how their patterns are built and maintained, not in kind. It says nothing here about whether either is aware. That is a separate question, held open, and taken up elsewhere.
What this is not
- Not "everything is energy" as mood or metaphor. Every rung above is a specific, mainstream physical claim, tagged as such.
- Not vitalism. Nothing here adds a life force. The point is the reverse: no extra ingredient is needed to get from matter to a self-maintaining pattern.
- Not "wave genetics," and not any claim that DNA broadcasts or is tuned by external fields. CONTESTED
- Not a claim that objects are conscious. The interior question is deliberately left open here.
