Premises and Their Status

Every load-bearing assumption the frameworks rest on, graded by confidence, each with its alternative and its defeater, the thing that would lower it. One certainty, everything else a bet, nothing laundered into more than it is.

The rigorous backing for Starting From "I Am". This lists the assumptions everything else is built on and grades each one. The point is not to win the argument by asserting; it is to show exactly how much weight each premise can bear, and to name what would make it give. Tags: ESTABLISHED FRAMING OPEN CONTESTED.

The ladder runs from the one certainty outward. Confidence falls as you climb away from it.

The ladder

# Premise Confidence The alternative What would lower it (defeater)
0 Experience is occurring ("I am") 100%, the only one None coherent; denying it requires experiencing the denial Nothing. It is self-verifying.
1 A self that endures, an "I" that owns experience and lasts through time High, not 100% A stream of momentary experiences with no enduring owner ("it thinks," not "I think") Honest inspection finding only momentary awareness, no continuous owner
2 There is a world beyond my experience Very high Solipsism; a simulation with no outside Cannot be raised to certainty; the gap from #0 is unbridgeable by proof
3 The world is regular (the future resembles the past) Very high; pragmatically unavoidable Hume: no guarantee regularity continues A genuine, repeatable break in natural regularity
4 It is all one thing (monism); everything observed of it is vibration High for the monism; the ground's ultimate nature left open More than one fundamental kind; or a still, non-vibratory ground A demonstrated phenomenon that resists every vibration or field description
5 The boundaries are mostly terminological (cohesiveness/synonymy) High where an adapter exists; candidate elsewhere Some boundaries are real seams, not words A faithful, two-way adapter that still fails to collapse the distinction
6 Translatability, a working adapter proves synonymy (the convertibility test) High as a method, regardless of ultimate metaphysics Equivalence is only ever declared, never proven by construction A built, faithful adapter between two things that are nonetheless not one

Notes on the rungs

Rung 0, the one certainty. ESTABLISHED, uniquely Everything else on this site is, in the end, a bet placed from here. It is certain and it is almost empty; those two facts are the same fact.

Rung 1, the enduring self. OPEN Most of us treat "I" as obviously solid, but in the bare instant the only given is experiencing, not a persistent experiencer. The continuity of the self is an inference, a good one, but an inference. It is flagged here because honesty starts at home.

Rung 2, the external world. FRAMING This is the famous gap. You cannot deduce a world from "I am"; the step is an inference to the best explanation, not a proof. Holding it at "very high, not certain" is not weakness; it is the exact honesty the rest of the framework depends on.

Rung 3, regularity. FRAMING Hume's problem of induction: that the sun rose every day is not a proof it rises tomorrow. We rely on regularity because we must, and because it has never failed us, not because it is guaranteed.

Rung 4, monism. FRAMING The load-bearing metaphysical bet. That everything examined reduces to a vibration-like description (matter as field excitations) is strong, but it is a claim about the observable order: whether the ultimate ground is itself vibration or something still, such as pure awareness, is left open and taken up in The Nature of the Ground. The monism itself, that it is all one thing, is held at high credence, honestly short of certain. And the origin, whether the order arose from a "no-vibration" past, is the deepest open cell, taken up in The Origin.

Rung 5, cohesiveness. FRAMING / ESTABLISHED where proven. The synonymy claim is settled exactly where a working adapter exists (light and electricity, sound and radio) and a candidate everywhere else. This is the one rung that converts from bet to near-certainty one adapter at a time.

Rung 6, the convertibility test. FRAMING The method survives even if the metaphysics is wrong: you can dissolve false walls and build translators whether or not reality is "really," finally, one vibrating thing. This is why the method can be held with confidence while the metaphysics is held with humility; they are different rungs.

Truth and proof are not the same thing

FRAMING The ladder is built this way because of one distinction that sits under all of it. Truth is what is. Proof is our access to it. The two are not the same, and reality owes us no proof of itself; it is whatever it is, whether or not anyone has shown it. There is no burden of proof out in the world. There is only what is, and our partial, revisable reading of it.

This is why a theory is never the same thing as a fact. A theory is a well-made explanation that has fit everything thrown at it so far, which is not the same as being true. The history of the strongest theories is partly a history of them falling: the aether, phlogiston, caloric, absolute space, Euclid's geometry taken as the one shape of the world. None were sloppy. They were the best available, held with full confidence, until the conditions changed. ESTABLISHED

And the ones we do prove are proven inside a frame, not for all conditions. In physics a "proven" theory holds within the range it was tested and can be bounded by a wider one: Newton was not wrong, he was the low-speed, weak-gravity corner of relativity, exact where he applies and silent outside it. ESTABLISHED In mathematics the certainty is real but conditional: a theorem is true given its axioms, and the axioms are a choice. Change the parallel postulate and a different geometry is true. ESTABLISHED Gödel closed the last exit: any system rich enough for arithmetic holds truths it cannot prove, and cannot even prove its own consistency from the inside. ESTABLISHED So "always true, in every condition, needing no frame" describes nothing we prove.

It describes one thing, and it is rung 0. Experience is occurring needs no frame and no proof because it is not a map of reality that could be checked against the territory. It is the territory, present to itself. That is why it alone sits at 100% and everything else is graded. The gap between truth and proof is not a flaw to be closed later. It is the reason the framework grades its credence and names its defeaters instead of claiming to have proven anything. FRAMING

The rule this enforces

Two things, kept apart: what is known (rung 0) and what is bet (everything above it), with every bet labeled and given a defeater. A claim with no defeater is not a stronger claim; it is a dogma. The whole framework is an attempt to never cross that line.
